When we picked out Harvey, we looked for how he reacted to us and if he showed signs of affection. We took him to the dog park to see if he appropriately reacted to other dogs. Finally, did he listen to us, relinquishing possessions such as food and toys?

Although no puppy is perfect without obedience training, look for signs of confidence, curiosity, and sociability. A well-adjusted puppy is more likely to grow into a balanced adult dog.

Consider the age of the puppy. Puppies at different stages of development have varying needs and energy levels. Choose an age that aligns with your lifestyle. The younger the puppy, the more effort you will need to put in. A puppy one year or older should understand basic commands and be willing to follow them, showing they are ready to be a part of your pack.

Ensure the puppy is healthy. Check for bright eyes, a clean coat, and good overall condition. Ask for health records and information on vaccinations and deworming.
